In fact, one study?? found that people reported experiencing at least one emotion 90% of the time, with positive emotions being reported over 2.5 times more frequently than negative emotions.  Not only do emotions provide automatic feedback that can help keep you safe, but they can also motivate you to take action and empower you to make decisions. But when you’re overwhelmed or feeling helpless, its not uncommon to turn to emotional numbing since it provides you with a protective defense. While this may provide temporary relief, learning to cope with difficult feelings this way can have long-lasting consequences.   The Important Role of Emotions What Is Emotional Numbing? “Emotional numbing is the mental and emotional process of shutting out feelings and may be experienced as deficits of emotional responses or reactivity,” explains Mayra Mendez, Ph.D., LMFT, a licensed psychotherapist and program coordinator at Providence Saint Johns Child and Family Development Center. Often times, emotional numbing results in temporary restrictions in the capacity to feel or express emotions.   While emotional numbing blocks or shuts down negative feelings and experiences, it also shuts down the ability to experience pleasure, engage in positive interactions and social activities, and interferes with openness for intimacy, social interests, and problem-solving skills, she adds. Ultimately, it becomes a coping tool defined by avoidance, denial, detachment, and dismissal that blocks capacity for confronting, processing, problem-solving, and managing of emotions and experiences. The symptoms of emotional numbing include: A loss of interest in important, once positive activities you used to enjoyFeeling distant or detached from othersFeeling flat, both physically and emotionallyLosing access to your feelingsAn inability to fully participate in lifeHaving difficulty with experiencing positive feelings such as happiness or love Additionally, when you’re emotionally numb, isolation can be a preferred state of living. Why People With PTSD Use Emotional Avoidance to Cope What Causes Emotional Numbing? Emotional numbing can happen as a result of physical or emotional pain. In an attempt to protect yourself from being hurt again, it’s not uncommon to disconnect, detach, or numb out feelings related to the situation. When this happens, you may feel temporary relief that allows you to move on with your life, but over time, this protective shield can begin to get in the way of connecting with others and getting in touch with feelings that are both positive and negative. How one person experiences emotional numbness may look completely different from how you present with symptoms. That’s because people experience feeling emotionally numb in many different ways. For example, you may struggle to connect with others or lose the ability to feel sadness or joy in response to certain events. There are a variety of reasons you may experience emotional numbing. Some of the more common causes of emotional numbing include: PTSDGriefOverwhelming stressDepressionPhysical abuseMental or emotional abuseSubstance abuse Feeling emotionally numb may also be a side effect of taking some medications that treat depression and anxiety.?? If you’re taking an antidepressant and feeling emotionally numb, it’s essential to work closely with your doctor.  They may choose to adjust your dosage or change the medication altogether. Emotional numbing is most often seen with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is a psychiatric disorder that can happen as a result of experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. ?? When this happens, the person often has intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to the event that can last for months or even years after the event is over. In order to cope with the trauma from an event, some people will turn to emotional numbing or avoidance as a way to manage the emotional and physical pain. For people with PTSD, this can also manifest in avoiding thoughts, feelings, or conversations about the traumatic event and  places or people that bring the event to mind. ?? Individuals diagnosed with anxiety disorders may also experience emotional numbness as a response to extremely high-stress levels, fear reactions, or excessive worry.  In fact, avoidance of both positive and negative emotions is associated with higher levels of anxiety. ?? Additionally, Mendez points out that depressive episodes may present with decreased attunement to feelings, dulling of emotions, and emotional numbing.   Higher levels of depression and mood dysregulation result in a greater propensity for emotional numbing, she adds. Can Antidepressants Make You Feel Emotionally Numb? Treatment Options There are a variety of treatment options available that can help you reduce the extent to which you try to escape, disengage from, or avoid your emotions. Once you find a therapist or psychologist to work with, the first step in the treatment process is unpacking the cause of your emotional numbing. A therapist can help you determine the underlying cause of the trauma, and come up with better ways to cope with overtaxing experiences and emotions.   The primary goal of psychotherapy, says Mendez, is to stimulate an understanding of the problem and expose viable and effective problem-solving alternatives. Additionally, participation in psychotherapy may also support learning and use of productive coping tools such as allowing feelings to surface and processing them in the safe, nurturing environment of the therapeutic relationship. Whichever therapy you choose, getting help can provide you with a safe place to express and approach your emotions.   Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) gives you the opportunity to express and understand your emotions, as well as examine the sources of those emotional responses. It also addresses how certain thoughts or ways of evaluating a situation may be contributing to your emotions. “Learning and practicing cognitive-behavioral strategies for managing stress, traumatic experiences, depression, and anxiety can help tame negative thoughts and avoid defensive patterns of coping that are inefficient and invalidating of emotional processing and problem-solving,” explains Mendez. Rather than avoiding or using maladaptive coping tools (such as numbing), CBT strategies aim to empower you to shift from thoughts of powerless to beliefs of strength and emotional competence. Acceptance and commitment therapy  (ACT) is another form of behavior therapy that is often used with PTSD and other mental health issues that have emotional numbing and avoidance as a symptom. ACT uses a mindfulness-based approach to help you recognize ways in which you attempt to suppress or control emotional experiences. The goal of ACT is to help you experience your inner feelings while focusing attention on living a meaningful life.  ?? Lifestyle Modifications In addition to psychotherapy, your doctor or therapist may also recommend several lifestyle modifications to help relieve some of the symptoms of emotional numbing, and hopefully, prevent more episodes from happening in the future. While it may take a bit of trial and error, the key to the success of lifestyle modifications is to find what works best for you. Here are a few examples you can try on your own.   Find your support system. While reaching out to others may seem difficult at first, seeking social support from friends and family that you trust may help provide a safe way to express your emotions.  Exercise and engage in physical activity. Staying physically active and engaging in exercises that you enjoy not only benefits your health, but it can also reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety.?? Try to include some form of exercise or physical activity most days of the week.  Get adequate rest. Both the quality of sleep and the amount of rest are critical to managing the symptoms of any physical, emotional, or mental health issue. This is especially true for mental health issues since insufficient sleep can make coping with the stressors of life more challenging. While waking during the night is common when dealing with PTSD, depression, anxiety, or any other trauma, try to get seven or more hours of sleep each night, which is the recommended amount for adults.Minimize stress. Both daily stressors and overwhelming stress are major contributors to emotional numbing. Finding ways to better manage stress is key to addressing the avoidance of emotions and feelings. Relaxation and mindfulness-based strategies are  helpful in decreasing the effects of stress. Postmodernism is most commonly thought of as a ‘departure from modernism’. It relies heavily on the increased speed of communication and the sharing of ideas; its codes are made up by self-conscious uses of pre-existing artistic styles and media conventions. It also depends on modern society being defined by media culture. In this essay, I will be examining Fight Club (David Fincher, 1999) and how it can be categorised as postmodern. In our current economic recession, the term â€Å"middle class† is almost non-existent in everyday vocabulary. The so-called middle class was a term that was used to describe the people in our society who were not part of the rich and wealthy class, but was also higher up in the socioeconomic ladder above the poverty line. Now the term isn’t used as much as other terms like, â€Å"hard working taxpayers† or â€Å"everyday Americans† (Chozick). Today, it s not as easy as just working hard, you now need money and experience in order to get anywhere in this society. That also might sound easy, but the problem is that in order to get a job that will help you sustain your life you need work experience, but in order to get work experience you need a job. Most people don’t accept volunteers anymore in order to just gain some experience in a field. Jobs want you to have years of relatable work experience as soon as you finish college. One solution that can help this process of being able to help fix the economy and the middle class is to start making more entry level jobs. If we were to create a job that was at minimum wage that can be used as a temporary place where people can gain experience in order to move on. The only problem with this would be that businesses aren’t going to want to hire more people for a job when they could just pay one person to do it. The results from the experiment determining the effects of pH on enzyme activity show that as the independent variable, pH, increases the dependent variable, percentage transmission, decreases. Less light can pass through the solution due to the gelatine being hydrolysed, which is the breaking of the peptide bonds between the NH2 and the COOH resulting in these forming groups on the amino acids. If more gelatine is hydrolysed there were be a greater amount of colour released from the jelly. At a lower pH such as pH 4 or 5, the more acidic conditions reduce the enzyme activity. This is because the structure of the protein and therefore the active site of the enzyme are altered by changes in pH. In particular ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds and disulphide in the tertiary structure may be disrupted, this can cause and unravelling of the tertiary globular structure, the enzyme is said to be denatured. So at non-optimal pH the substrate attaches less readily to the enzyme as the active site is no longer complementary to the substrate. It is only the optimal when the active site will best facilitate the enzyme-substrate complex formation. It is the unique R-groups of the amino acids that form a particular structure and the active site. There is therefore a specific active site formed by the R-group that best facilitates the bonding of the substrate to the trypsin. Evaluation: For measuring the percentage transmission results a colourimeter was used. This is because eye judgement is insufficient and using the colourimeter provides quantitative values. Due to the red pigmentation of the gelatine and trypsin solution a blue filter must be used in the colourimeter. A blue filter transmits blue light. Blue is also at the opposite end of the spectrum to the red, the blue light is then absorbed by the red solution and a reading can be taken. The pipette and pi-pumps were used to transfer the buffer solutions, distilled water and the trypsin into the boiling tubes. These were used as the pipette is the most accurate way of ensuring the exact amount of solution is used. When transferring the solutions into the boiling tubes you must touch the surface of the solution with the bottom of the pipette, this means that all the solution is added to the tube and therefore will increase the reliability. To improve the results from the experiment buffer solutions that were not whole pHs could have been used e. g. pH 4. 5, 5. 5 etc. This would have provided more reliable results as a wider range of results would have been produced. Using pHs with decimals would also help to more accurately determine the optimum pH as the optimum may have been above or below the pH stated in the hypothesis; 8. In this experiment however the optimum is taken at 8 because the graph does not rise again. To ensure the experiment was kept as a fair test a number of variables were controlled. The temperature of the solutions was kept constant by placing the boiling tubes into a test tube rack and setting it into a water bath with a fixed temperature of 25oC. The temperature needed to be kept low and fixed as a high temperature would denature the enzymes, they would therefore be unable to break down the gelatine and no results would be produced from the experiment. Keeping a constant temperature also meant that the solutions reacted at the same rate. The time in the water bath was also controlled to ensure that the enzymes were left to react for the same amount of time, making the experiment fair. If the enzymes were not exposed to the temperature for long enough then they would not have reacted well enough to produce valid results. The enzyme concentration used was a 2% concentration of Trypsin. If a higher concentration had been used in some of the boiling tubes the rate of the reaction would have increased. This is because there would have been more available active sites for the substrate to bind to; forming enzyme-substrate complexes at a faster rate and therefore more of the jelly would have been broken down during the time. Whereas if a lower concentration was used the active sites would be saturated and the rate would decrease. When cutting the jelly cubes the size needs to be uniform for the cubes. If the cubes are too small there isn’t a sufficient amount to be broken down by the Trypsin, causing the results to be unreliable. If they are too large then they may not completely dissolve in the solution meaning that they will block the light passing through the solution in the colourimeter. Validity of Results: Due to the wide range of results they are not reliable as there is no narrow range and there are many areas of the experiment that could have caused a decrease in the reliability of the results. The jelly cubes were not cut to the exact same size. This would have caused a decrease in the rate if they were too small. It could have been improved by measuring the lengths of the sides of the cubes and weighing them to find out their mass. A series of precautions must also be taken using the colourimeter. The cuvettes must be clean with no finger prints. If they are dirty it will stop light passing through the cuvette to the colourimeter making the results unreliable. The same cuvette must also be used throughout and it needs to be orientated in the same way. The cuvette must be filled with sufficient solution to ensure the light is intercepted. If there is not enough solution the light will pass straight through producing a high unreliable reading. The main reason the data is unreliable is because the jelly cubes were cut too small and across the different groups there would be no uniform size of cubes. The small cube size would affect the results because of the small surface area. The Trypsin would have had enough time to break down the gelatine. There also should have been a greater spread of pH between 4. 0 and 8. 0. If the experiment was to be repeated larger jelly cube sizes would need to be used to improve the reliability.

These men come to think of the drama as a classic and therefore see it as an extension of there own artistic ability. Eliot also realizes that in the case of Hamlet interpretation is futile and that only criticism is relevant. Interpretation comes with a certain understanding of the nature of the work and a basis on the history surrounding the tragedy. Through searching and digging many scholars have found the historical relevance behind Hamlet, but Eliots belief is that the public as a whole was to be left ignorant of this information and in turn was not meant to fully understand the full scope of the play. Eliots idea is valid and it has many good points, but I tend to disagree with him. It is true that much of the story line in Hamlet is confusing and that the emphasis shifts numerous times from the actual plot to the actions of the main character, but I find that to be what draws me towards the story. The play is time less to me, but not for this time. For those people who lived in the Elizabethan era it may have been a little more straightforward, but to us it seems to have lost its hold and our understanding. ...

Moreover insulin from other animals was not exactly as same as those in humans, causing many side-effects. Also many people were against the use of animal insulin for ethical or religious reasons. This problem had to be solved in 1970s biotechnological companies began working of genetically modifying a bacterium to produce insulin by insertion of a human gene. many different methods were tried tested, then finally in the early 1980s they suceeded, this was agreat achievement in the science world. the procedure was as follows :- Isolation of insulin gene insulin is a small protein . the first challenge was to isloate the insulin gene from the rest of the DNA in the human cell. But there was a problem doing so directly, instead the mRNA carrying the code for synthesizing insulin was extracted from the cells in the pancreas that produces insulin, called B-cells. then the mRNA was left in incubation with reverse transcriptase, reverse transcriptase is a special retrovirus, it does the opposite of transcription i.e codes for DNA from RNA, this newly coded DNA is called complimentary DNA or simply cDNA. at first single stranded molecules were formed, which then turned in double helix. these DNA molecules carried the code for human insulin. these DNA molecules then needed to be stuck to other DNA strands, so they were given sticky ends by adding lenghts of single stranded DNA made up of guanine nucleotide to each end using enzyymes. insertion of gene into a vector for the human insulin gene to be inserted into a bacterium, there has to be an intermediate carrier of the gene called a vector this was a plasmid. plasmids are small circular pieces of DNA found in many bacteria. plasmids can freely move into bacterium cells and if we are able to insert the human DNA inside the plasmid then insert plasmid into a bacterium. To obatin the plasmids from the bacteria containing them, these bacteria frist had to be mixed with enzymes to dissolve their cell walls. then centrifuged so that large organelles e.g chromosomes small ones like plasmids would be seperated. restriction enzymes were used to slice open the the circular DNA making up the plasmid. sticky ends were added again but this time the nucleotide used to make them conatined cytosine guanine bases on their ends paired up. DNA ligase was then used to link the nucleotide backbone together so that the human insulin gene became part of tthe plasmid. this was the manufacture of recombinant DNA. Advantages of treating diabetes by human insulin There are a number of advantages of using the human insulin produced by genetically engineered bacteria: it is chemically identical to the insulin that would have been produced had they not been diabetic, so there is little chance of an immune response because it is an exact fit in the human insulin receptors in human cell surface membranes, it brings about a much more rapid response than pig or cow insulin, like natural human insulin, the duration of the response is much shorter than pig or cattle insulin, it overcomes problems related to the development of a tolerance to insulin from pigs or cattle, it avoids any ethical issues that might arise from the use pig or cattle insulin, for example, religious objections to the use of pig insulin or objections from vegetarians to the use of animal products. Benefits of gene technology Through gene technology, it is now possible to produce: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ genetically modified organisms for a specific purpose. Previously, such genetic change would have to be brought about by selective breeding which requires organisms to be of the same species (able to breed successfully together), takes many generations and involves transfer of whole genomes, complete with undesirable background genes. Gene technology is much faster and involves transferring one or few genes, which may come from completely unrelated organisms, even from different kingdoms. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ specific products, such as human insulin and human growth hormone, thereby reducing the dependence on products from other, less reliable sources, such as pig or cow insulin. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ reduce use of agrochemicals such as herbicides and pesticides since crops can be made resistant to particular herbicides, or can be made to contain toxins that kill insects à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ clean up specific pollutants and waste materials bioremediation à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ potential for use of gene technology to treat genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis (see below) and SCID (Severe Combined Immune Deficiency) as well as in cancer treatment. Hazards of genetic engineering Genes inserted into bacteria could be transferred into other bacterial species, potentially including antibiotic resistance genes and those for other materials, which could result in antibiotic resistance in pathogens, or in bacteria that can produce toxic materials or break down useful materials. Regulation is designed to minimise the risks of escape of such genes. There is little evidence that such genes have escaped into wild bacterial populations. Crop plants have, by their nature, to be released into the environment to grow, and many millions of hectares of genetically engineered crops, both experimental and commercial, are planted across the globe. So far, fears that they might turn out to be super-weeds, resistant to herbicides and spreading uncontrollably, or that their genes might transfer into other closely related wild species, forming a different kind of super-weed, or that they might reduce biodiversity by genetic contamination of wild relatives seem to have proved unfounded. A paper was published in Nature in 2001 showing that Mexican wild maize populations were contaminated with genes from genetically manipulated maize, but the methods used were flawed and subsequent studies have not confirmed this contamination, suggesting that the wild maize is not genetically contaminated. There is some evidence that Bt toxin, geneticially engineered into plants such as cotton and maize, whilst very effective in killing the targe t species, may kill other, desirable, insects such as bees and butterflies, and may also cause natural selection of Bt toxin resistant insects. Future events may show that such environmental risks are greater than they look at present. Food that is derived from genetically engineered organisms may prove to be unexpectedly toxic or to trigger allergic reactions when consumed. There is little reliable evidence that this has been so, but the risk remains. Food containing the expressed products of antibiotic resistance marker genes could be consumed at the same time as treatment with the antibiotic was occurring, which would potentially reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. The greater the number of connections to a network of ideas, the better the understanding (Van de Walle, 2007, p.27).† My philosophy of a constructivist mathematics education At what point does a student, in all intents and purposes, experience something mathematical? Does it symbolise a student that can remember a formula, write down symbols, see a pattern or solve a problem? I believe in enriching and empowering a student’s mathematical experience that fundamentally stems from a Piagetian genetic epistemological constructivist model. This allows the student to scaffold their learning through cognitive processes that are facilitated by teaching in a resource rich and collaborative environment (Thompson, 1994, p.69). Constructivist learning Constructivist learning in mathematics should endeavour to encourage students to â€Å"construct their own mathematical knowledge through social interaction and meaningful activities (Andrew, 2007, p.157).† I want students to develop their own conceptual frameworks, experiences, surroundings and prior knowledge. With learning being a social process, students can discuss in small groups their solution strategies rather than silently working at their desks (Clements et al., 1990, p.2). Constructivist teaching I consider the role of the constructivist teacher to enable to guide and facilitate a student’s thought processes and support the invention of viable mathematical ideas. A skilled teacher will also construct an appropriate classroom environment where students openly discuss, reflect on and make sense of tasks set before them (Clements et al, 1990). Ps I Love You Film Review Essay

â€Å"Finding someone you love and who loves you back is a wonderful, wonderful feeling. But finding a true soul mate is an even better feeling. A soul mate is someone who understands you like no other, loves you like no other, will be there for you forever, no matter what. They say that nothing lasts forever, but I am a firm believer in the fact that for some, love lives on even after we’re gone.† This quotation comes from book â€Å"PS I love you†, written by Cecelia Ahern, and perfectly describes the novel. This book is definitely for women, when you read this you can find yourself laughing and crying all at once. Holly and Gerry had a perfect life. They are happily married, they lived in Dublin closed to their friends and family, the world lies at their feet. When Gerry dies, Holly is devastated. At the day of her 30th birthday, the man who was her soul mate, her lover, has left her. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. But before he died, Gerry wrote a series of letters, some kind of guide includes a mission for Holly to get her life back on track. Over the years which they were together Garry has always been the organized one and long before he became sick he joked with Holy that if he died before her, he would leave her a special list of things to do to assure her life ran smoothly without him. And he kept his promise. Holly discovers that her mother has a large envelope for her. One for each of the remaining months of the year. Letters are delivered in surprising ways, each contained a new adventure or challenges and each signing of in the same way: â€Å"P.S. I Love You†. It’s a bittersweet tale that not only focuses on death but also celebrates life and the joy that is found in living. And although Holly eventually finds peace through the letters that Gerry has left behind, it’s her family and friends that play the biggest part in helping her to let go and move on from grief. Holly’s mother and best friends begin to worry that Gerry’s letters are keeping Holly tied to the past, but in fact, each letter is pushing her further into a new future. Gerry’s first instructions are not only to Holly, but also to her best friends, to get out and celebrate Holly’s birthday together. Denise and Sharon seem to represent two aspects of life, Sharon is married and is on her way to building a family, while Denise is still single. She is looking for the right guy, but she does not want to waste time, so she has her checklist. She is definitely not shy but the most importantly, she is a good friend. Holly’s friend Sharon is married to John, who, as often happens with couples, was Gerry’s best friend. John is in a bit of a strange position because he loved Gerry, too, and maybe he is feeling a little left out. John thinks he will never have another friend like Gerry. The next character is The new bartender in Patricia’s pub, Daniel meets and forms an instant attraction to Holly at, of all places, Gerry’s wake. Is interesting, and spontaneous and he says things that are unpredictable, and does not feel the need to apologize if people are taken aback. He becomes a shoulder for Holly to lean on because he is the one person among her friends who didn’t know Gerry so there’s no reason for him to tread lightly or walk on eggshells when his name comes up, which she finds refreshing. Daniel is brave enough to speak his mind, and I think that is helpful to Holly in dealing with her loss. With Gerry’s words as her guide, Holly embarks on a journey of rediscovery in a story about marriage, friendship and how a love so strong can turn the finality of death into a new beginning for life. The tasks range was different, from getting a new job to singing karaoke in front of a nightclub audience. With some help from her friends, and her noisy and loving family, Holly aversely embraces each of the tasks and discovers along the way that she has more inner strength than she could ever have imagined. She also struggle with feelings of guilt when she meets a handsome man who is clearly attracted to her. The love story is told in a unique way. The main character must started to live without her husband. He was the earth she lived, the ground she stepped and air she breathes. She did not have a proper job, she was not ambitious, she did not have any hobbies. Everything she did in her life revolved around Gerry. They were talking about how unpredictable life could be as one didn’t always get what one expected. No matter how many times you read this book, it will always brings you a smile on your lips with tears in your eyes. This is one of those books that make you cry from the time it starts, then later on lifts you up with some comedy, proceeds with an aura of hope and some heart-warming flash-backs. Cecelia Ahern has written this book brilliantly, she describes the emotions and struggle of life. Author also has taught me a valuable lesson about the true meaning of living and the divide between life and death, and gave the lesson about what it takes to lead meaningful and purposeful life. I really enjoyed it book. It is a romance, but it explores a hard issue. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves a good dramatic, and funny fiction story. To have a fulfilling life, one must have a dream. However, with the wrong dream, even a fulfilling life is not a happy one. For example in the play, Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, the protagonist, Willy Loman, dreams of becoming a respected and successful salesman. However, Willy Loman dreams the wrong dream and as a result its leads to his tragic demise. This is evident through Willy’s dream being unrealistic, Biffs troubles due to Willy instilling his dream into him, Willys pride resulting from his dream, and the illusion that Willy’s dream creates. As a result, the fabricated life that Willy thought was perfect, ultimately falls apart as it turns into reality. Willy teaches Biff that all one needs to succeed in the business world is to be well liked and completely neglects the importance of hard work and skill. This is clear when examining Willy’s view of Bernard in which he says, Bernard can get the best marks in school, y’understand, but when he gets out in the business world, y’understand, you are going to be five times ahead of him.
